We created The Short Straw to build a more sustainable future for our planet and the people living on it. We serve the planet by creating a beautiful reusable product which can replace harmful single use plastics. We serve people by directly funding projects which give communities in the developing world access to safe water & sanitation - to help unlock a safer and more prosperous future.
The driving force behind everything we do, and the very fabric of our business is built around one core belief.
"Big changes start small"
One of the biggest challenges facing society right now is our impact on the environment. It is now undeniable that humans are causing untold damage to our planet and its inhabitants. It's clear some changes need to be made.
The reality is, many of us simply don't have the power to make some of the huge economic or political changes required - like reducing global emission of greenhouse gasses or switching to more sources of renewable power.
So instead we decided to focus on some of the small changes each of us can make in our daily lives - in the belief that millions of tiny changes will compound to create a massive impact.
Objective number one. Eliminate single-use plastic straws forever. Why plastic straws? We believe they serve as the poster-child of our disposable culture. The notion of using something once before disposing of it, never to be used again is archaic. Some of these items are useful to us for just a few minutes, yet remain in landfill or our oceans for hundreds of years.
A 2018 study estimated that the average person can use up to 130 plastic straws every year, which could be up to 10,000 in an average lifetime. We've set out to reduce that number - to just 1.
We are also committed to giving back to some of the worlds must vulnerable communities. We believe water is a powerful thing. It can enable economic prosperity, improve health, unlock education and so much more. However, millions of people around the world lack access to this basic need.
We have partnered with Water.org to be able provide thousands of people with access to safe water every year.

Our Design Process
We began by taking a look at what was already out on the market. We found some pretty great solutions, but none which we felt were quite perfect.
Paper straws become soggy very quickly, and many are not recyclable.
Bamboo straws are great, but tend to be bulky and affect the taste of drinks.
Glass straws were cool, but again were bulky. And fragile.
Stainless steel straws were nearly perfect - but not quite. They were too long to comfortably carry with you, and too thin to handle smoothies or shakes. Hot drinks were also out of the question.
So, after several months of designing, development and prototyping - we came up with The Short Straw™. It's what we believe to be the best reusable drinking straw on the market.
